Edge 21: Consecutive Interpreting
Edge 21: Consecutive Interpreting is the first volume of the three-volume Edge 21 set. The other two volumes are:
This title includes 1 book, and 1 USB Flash Drive.
Each of the three volumes addresses one of the three modes of interpreting used in court interpretation and tested in major court interpretation certification exams. Together, these three volumes, and their accompanying audio CDs, provide a complete set of materials to practice the techniques of Spanish-English court interpreting.
Edge 21: Consecutive Interpreting consists of a 192-page book and a set of seven audio CDs (now included in a USB Flash Drive). The book is three-hole drilled so that you can, if you wish, keep it in a standard three-ring binder.
These materials are suitable for use both by individuals seeking to acquire or improve court interpreting skills on their own and by college level court interpreter training programs.
About the Audio Recordings
The audio files that accompany the Edge 21 were recorded using a two-tone system that allows the user to select between multiple versions of the same lesson. For example, while practicing your interpretation you will wish to hear the source-language materials only, without Holly Mikkelson’s sample interpretation for reference. Alternatively, you may wish to hear how Holly interpreted the lesson. In this case you would play the source-language materials with the accompanying interpretation or the interpretation by itself.
When the Edge 21 used CDs for audio, these listening options were selected by adjusting the balance control on a stereo or CD player to hear the desired combination of channels. With the transfer of the audio materials to USB drives, the channels have been parsed into sound files and arranged in folders corresponding to the original three listening options. Please bear this in mind when playing the materials, and navigate to the “Source,” “Interpretation,” or “Two-Tone” folder before you begin.
Note: For proper playback, it is recommended that you import all of the files into your media player, rather than attempting to play them directly from the USB. Otherwise, the player will stop after each sound file and you will not be able to play an entire lesson smoothly. You will notice that lessons are divided into many small sound files. This was done to facilitate navigation on a CD player. While it may appear daunting to see so many individual files on your USB, know that if you select a desired folder and import it to your media player, you should be able to play the lesson through to the end without having to select individual files.
Author's Note About the Interpretations
The interpretations you hear on the recordings are live and unprepared. As a result, you will hear occasional minor errors and self-corrections. However, there are no major errors, and you can rest assured that any phrasing or terminology you hear in these interpretations would be acceptable on a certification exam. On the other hand, there are usually many correct ways to interpret a given term or expression, and there are differences of opinion and preference among professional interpreters. In other words, you do not have to accept my versions as definitive.
-Holly Mikkelson
Consecutive Note Taking
Edge 21: Consecutive Interpreting contains an extensive section on consecutive note taking. Included in that section are the author's own notes on three of the lessons in the book.
